Is this circular economy?
China was caught while digging up old vessels from WW2. They wanted tosalvage their low-background steel, also known as pre-war steel. This type of steel has low radiation and is valuable for use in medical and scientific equipment. Another possible reason is to obtain other metals such as aluminum and brass from the wrecks. Some of the vessels that have been targeted by Chinese salvagers include two British warships, HMS Prince of Wales and HMS Repulse, that were sunk by Japanese forces in 1941 off the coast of Malaysia.
The UK Ministry of Defence has condemned this practice as a desecration of maritime war graves. But is this always true? Sometimes ships were sunk as a precaution or punishment for the enemy! And why should so many resources remain useless on the seabed?
